Making mini landscape magic

I like thinking of these as heirloom landscapes because each is made from an older oil that wasn’t quite right. Instead of being discarded, each piece is turned into something new and in doing so, I’m able to make a piece of art with an even richer story, worthy of wall space.
I find making and seeking out art is intuitive and about trusting my feelings, so no surprise, it’s where I start these landscapes.
I feel out the old oil with the concept for the new landscape. Where will my light/dark areas fall? Where will the tree line be in relationship to what’s already there?
My favorite time to look for landscapes is during the early morning light and when it’s falling in the evening. Painting outside is wonderful and the colors are the best! The ease of taking pictures to use later for composition, when my memory will provide me the color, is fantastic too.
- I talk for about 4 minutes in the video below about the process and then it speeds through. If you have any questions I am happy to answer.
